Import continues to increase and exert a profound effect on the economy of Ghana despite policies of import substitution and measures to promote local manufacturing. Food imports have fluctuated in recent years, but have increased sharply since 2000. Population growth, rising middle class and rural exodus to the cities are changing the way people shop and eat. More than half (51%) of the population live in urban areas, a figure that is expected to increase by 3.1% per annum by 2035.
